"The Widow's Rant" was entered into the music manuscript collections of American musicians Edward Murphy (1790, Newport, R.I.) and Luther Kingsley (1795, Mansfield, Conn.). Later, it was entered into Book 2 of the large mid-19th century music manuscript of County Cork uilleann piper and Church of Ireland cleric wikipedia:James_Goodman_(musicologist) [[1828-1896), copied from James Aird's 1782 collection. The tune also turns up in one of the turn-of-the-20th century Harding Co. publications (New York) as "Newsman (The)."
