BUCKWHEAT BATTER. Old-Time, Jig. The melody also appears in a 1950 collection entitled Don Messer's Favorite Melodies (referencing the great 'down-east' style Canadian fiddler Don Messer). E.F. Adam (Old Time Fiddlers Favorite Barn Dance Tunes for the Violin), 1928. Though West Virginia's Tweedy Brothers 1928 recording shared the name Buckwheat Batter with modern Canadian versions, the tune is different than Messer's and predates Messer's recording. Buckwheat Batter is the repertoire of Western Maryland fiddler Shawn Craver and is similar to the Tweedy recording.
Recorded source: Gennett 6604 (78 RPM), 1928, Tweedy Brothers (W.Va. brother band Harry, Charles and George, who played twin fiddles and piano). Gennett 3292 (78 RPM), 1926, Tom Owen's Barn Dance Trio of WLS (Paul Tyler says that Owens, a caller, was a native of Missouri).
