Tune properties and standard notation
HESSIAN DANCE [2]. AKA and see "Hessian Camp (2)," "Asian Camp," "Ty Tol or the country dance," "Old Roger." English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune and dance, entirely different than version #1, appears in Thompson's 200 Country Dances, volume III (1773) as "Hessian Camp (1)". Van Cleef and Keller (1980) find a similar American dance in America in the 1808 Select Collection (Otsego, New York). Although the tune has not been found in other American sources, the names "Hessian Dance" and "Hessian Camp" for country dances do appear. There seems to have been some confusion, even in the period, between the both melody and dance engendered by the similarity of the titles.
