Tune properties and standard notation
MR. O'CONNOR. Irish, Planxty (3/4 time, 'A' and 'B' parts, 6/8 time 'C' and 'D' parts). G Minor (O’Sullivan): E Minor (S. Johnson). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. A composition of blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), first appearing in Dublin publishers John and William Neal’s collection of c. 1721. The “unusually long” tune is sometimes played in the key of E Minor, and has an attached jig. Donal O’Sullivan, the leading authority on Carolan, could not identify the O’Connor of the title, but believes it was probably composed for some important patron.
