BEGGAR'S MEAL POKE'S. Scottish, Slow Air. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. A slow air with the character of a strathspey, says Emmerson (1971). It was composed (on authority of Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion, 1758) by Scottish King James VI, who became James I of England in 1603, but Emmerson believes this ascription may be the result of some confusion with his ancestor James I, who was the reputed author of the verses "The Jolly Beggar" associated with this tune.
