BLACKBERRY QUADRILLE. Canadian, American, New England; Quadrille (6/8 time). USA; Central New York State, New England, Arizona. D Major (most versions): G Major (Ruth). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is related to "Off She Goes" and "Rustic Reel;" there is also a "Blackberry Reel" that is quite close to the tune, collected by Cazden (1955) in New York's Catskill Mountain region. It has been reported that there is/was a dance called the Blackberry Quadrille danced at barn and contra-dances in New England and New York. The tune was even known as far afield as Arizona, where it was played by champion fiddler Viola "Mom" Ruth in the mid-20th century. Transplanted French-Canadian fiddler Omer Marcoux {1898-1982} (Concord, N.H.) played a version of this tune mixed up with "Little Burnt Potato" called "Burning Potatoes" (see "Little Burnt Potato").
