KELSO HIRING FAIR. AKA and see "Victoria Waltz." English, Waltz. C Major ('A' part), D Major ('B' part) & G Major ('C' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBC. From the playing of Borders fiddler Tom 'Tam' Hughes, who had the tune from an elderly street fiddler at the Kelso hiring fair (for agricultural labor) in 1928. Larry Sanger identifies a distanced version of the tune that was in the repertoire of Donegal fiddler John Doherty under the title "Victoria (The)," also known as "Exhibition (The)" (although given as "Speaking Waltz (The)" on the Folktracks album "Pedlar's Pack"). See also note for "Annotation:Victoria Waltz."
