CUTTY CLAY. Scottish, Reel. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. Cutty Clay is a type of clay, often mixed with China clay to give it strength. 'Cutty clay' also refers to the common tobacco smoking pipe of centuries ago; it was often made with a long stem and used as a public convenience by several people in a tavern. An individual who wanted a fresh stem would break off the stem for a fresh mouthpiece, eventually rendering the clay pipe "cutty" (which in Scots dialect means 'short').
