CUMBERLAND BLUES [1]. Old-Time, Country Rag. C Major ('A' part) & F Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Reconstructed from the 1921 pop hit "Wabash Blues" (a favorite with early jazz bands) by Madison County, Ky., fiddler Doc Roberts, whose fiddling (according to Tom Carter) reflected "the movement of new influences into the Upland South." Musicologist Charles Wolfe thinks the melody "a splendid combination of ragtime, blues, and old time-fiddling."

Source for notated version: Doc Roberts (KY) [Phillips].

Printed sources: Phillips (Traditional American Fiddle Tunes), vol. 2, 1995; p. 37.

Recorded sources: Conqueror 8240 (78 RPM), Doc Roberts (Ky.). County 412, "Fiddling Doc Roberts." County 511, Doc Roberts - "Mountain Blues." Rounder 0213, The Chicken Chokers (Mass.) - "Chokers and Flies" (1985).
