BREEM DOG, THE. Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. Composed by the great Scots fiddler-composer J. Scott Skinner (1843-1927), who explains that a 'breem dog' was "an ancient obsolete warlike implement at Kildrummy for removing...whin reets Barrie's Breem Dog." The University of Aberdeen's Skinner site says the breems dogs were "Large shears used on farms to cut down 'breem', Scotch broom or whin, considered to be weeds."
Printed source: Skinner (Harp and Claymore), 1904; p. 81.
