ECLIPSE [3], THE. AKA and see "Novelty (2) (The)." Irish, Hornpipe. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BBDCC'. The original name of the tune is "The Novelty," found in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) credited to one F.A. Morrison. The "Eclipse" title seems to have been a mistake by Irish fiddler Sean McGuire, who was a major influence Irish musicians and much imitated. So much so, for example, that New York accordion player Luke O'Malley (for whom McGuire was a mentor), who had learned the tune as "Novelty (2) (The)" from Long Island fiddler Larry Redican, changed the title to "The Eclipse" in his 1976 publication. The name "Eclipse" has thus taken root among Irish musicians.
