BATH WALTZ, THE. AKA - "Prussian Waltz." English, Waltz (3/4 or 3/8 time). England; Shropshire, Sussex, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire. G Major (Ashman, Raven): A Major (Sumner): E Flat Major: B Flat Major (Wilson). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. This English waltz appears to have been known throughout the country. It appears in the 1823-26 collection of papermaker and musician Joshua Gibbons (Lincolnshire, 1778-1871), where it is given in the key of 'C' major. It is also printed in the Welch MSS (Sussex) and John Clare's MSS (Northamptonshire). Dancing master Thomas Wilson printed the tune as "Prussian Waltz," giving "Bath Waltz" as an alternate title. See note for "Bath Carnival" for more on Bath.

Sources for notated versions: a c. 1837-1840 MS by Shropshire musician John Moore [Ashman]; Joshua Gibbons 1823-26 MS [Sumner].
