CONQUEST, THE. English, Country Dance Tune. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The dance was originally published in Bride's Favourite Collection of 200 Select Country Dances, Cotillons, published by Longman, Lukey & Broderip in London in 1776. It subsequently appeared in Samuel, Ann and Peter Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances (London, 1781) and Thompson's Compleat Collection, vol. 5 (London, 1788). Country dance instructions for "The Conquest" (but not the tune) appear in A Select Collection of the Newest and Most Favorite Country Dances, published by H. and E. Phinney in Ostego, N.Y., in 1808, and in A Treatise on Dancing by 'Saltator' (a pseudonym) in Boston, 1809.

Source for notated version: the music manuscript of Captain George Bush (1753-1797), a fiddler and officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution [Keller].

Printed source: Keller (Fiddle Tunes from the American Revolution), 1992; p. 15.
