The melody was first published in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 4 (London, 1780). The tune sometimes is called “The Bishop,” a confusion due to the melody being paired with a dance called The Bishop (in the Apted book, for example).
