The melody is perhaps derived from "I'm Over Young to Marry Yet (1)." The "Love Won't/Will You Marry Me" title comes from various ditties set to the song, often in call-and-response form, such as:
Love won't you marry me,
Marry me, marry me?
Love won't you marry me
And keep me from all danger
No I won't marry you,
Marry you, marry you;
No I won't marry you
Because you are a stranger.
