COFFIN SHIPS, THE. Irish, Slow Air. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). Composed by Donegal fiddler Tommy Peoples. The title refers to the decrepit, often barely seaworthy, vessels that traversed the Atlantic during the Irish Potato Famine of the mid 19the century bringing refuges to North America. They were termed 'coffin ships' because of the wretched, overcrowded and unsanitary conditions that bred illness among those herded passengers already weakened by hunger. Tommy Peoples - "The Quiet Glen."
