Back to Maguire's Lamentation
MAGUIRE'S LAMENTATION (Cuma Mic Guidhir). Irish, Air (3/4 time). E Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. O'Sullivan (1983) remarks the Maguries were at one time a powerful clan of Fermanagh in Ulster, until the confiscation of James I, though since there are no words extent it is difficult to discern exactly which Maguire is honored in this elegy.
Source for notated version: the Irish collector Edward Bunting noted the melody from one C. Martin, Harper, Virginia, County Cavan.
Printed sources: Bunting (Ancient Irish Music), 1840; No. 36, p. 28. O'Sullivan/Bunting, 1983; No. 36, pp. 57-58.
