The tune dates from 1703 with the "Up with Aily" title, although it was previously published in 1701 under the title “Hare's Maggot” by Henry Playford. The tune with the "Up with Aily" title appears in the Dancing Master, 12th edition (London, 1703) and was retained in all subsequent editions of the long-running series through the 18th and final edition of 1728 (then published in London by John Young).
