MOUNT VERNON. American, March (cut time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. A melody that appears in several American musicians' manuscript collections of the latter 18th century/early 19th century, including those of Luther Kingsley (Mansfield, Conn., 1795), Ebenezer Bevens (Middletown, Ct., 1825), and Gurdon Trumbull (Stonington, Ct., c. 1801). Similarly, dance instructions for "Mount Vernon" appear in American manuscript collections and a few county dance publications from the same era. Presumably the title refers to the Virginia home of George Washington.
Source for notated version: the music manuscript copybook of Mansfield, Connecticut, fiddler Luther Kingsley (1795) [Miller]. The ms. is presently in the possession of the Mansfield Historical Society. Kingsley's house, at 958 Storrs Road, Mansfield dates from 1740, and still stands.
