Back to Lady Hardwick's Reel
LADY HARDWICKS REEL. English, Reel (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Some settings of "The Keel Row" resemble it slightly, according to Huntington (1977).
Source for notated version: The 1800-1802 music manuscript collection of William Litten [Huntington]. Although very little is known about ship's fiddler William Litten, he compiled his music manuscript while on a voyage to the East Indies, during the years 1800 to 1802. It is known that he made port in China and was on the return leg of his journey, and that he sailed on HMS Grogan on the return trip, for he mentions a stop at St. Helena on June 3rd, 1802. The manuscript came into the possession of a sailor named Allen Coffin, from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, who brought it home with him when he returned to the island from his own voyages, in the early decades of the 19th century.
