There are several versions of this old song, some more closely related musically than others, and some quite different. O'Neill prints two versions, and others can be found in O'Farrell and Bunting. Hardiman (Irish Minstrelsy, 1831)) says Catherine Tyrell was a member of a family who resided at the Pace (Tyrell's Pass) in county Westmeath.
