The dance instructions for the tune, but not the music, appear in the Menzies Manuscript, 1749 (pp. 1-2), contained in the Atholl Collection of the Sandeman Library, Perth, where "The New Way of Gil Don" is the alternate title for "General Stuart's Reel."
