CRY OF GALLEN, THE. AKA and see "Gallen Lament," "Gallen's Lament," "Margaret Roche (2)," Irish, Air (3/4 time). E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The air was earlier printed by uilleann piper O'Farrell in his Pocket Companion for the Irish or Union Pipes, vol. III (London, c. 1808, p. 34) as "Margaret Roche (2)." Like piper O'Farrell, Dublin-born John Clinton, in whose collection the melody also appears, was an expatriate Irishman living and working in London. The air also appears in Dublin music publisher Smollet Holden's A Collection of Old Established Irish Slow and Quick Tunes (c. 1805).
