Perhaps the title refers to South Carolina's official State Tree, the Sabal Palmetto, which honors the repulse of a British attack on Sullivan's Island on June 28th, 1776, when a palmetto-log fort, under Colonel William Moultrie, withstood the barrage of British cannons until the fleet retreated.
