Biographical notes
Daniel McLaren's name is found in the lists of subscribers to Niel Gow's first few collections, beginning with the first in 1784, where he is identified as a musician living in Edinburgh, although he seems to have been from Taymouth, Perthshire. McLaren published his own collection (Collection of Strathspey Reels, etc.) in 1794, and among the subscribers (for two copies) was Niel Gow himself.
