The tune was given the name by the source forWaterford County, Pa., "where three out of five plays the fiddle." Bayard (1981) thinks that Christeson's (1973) "Lost Indian (4)" is a version, "also, the second part [of Waterford Special] appears as the third part pf a tune in Elias Howe's Diamond School for the Violin, p. 47.
