LANCERS, THE. A dance form derived from the French regiments d'Lancier, which disseminated from military tradition to popular culture in the early 19th century. The dance did not arrive to the Shetland Isle of Whalsay until about 1907--its arrival "more or less coincided with the building of the first hall on the island" (Flett & Flett, 1964).
