PIRATE'S HORNPIPE, THE. AKA - "Pirate (The)." AKA and see "Holmes' Hornpipe," "Occidental Hornpipe." Scottish, Hornpipe. E Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in Kohler's Violin Repository, Book 3 (Edinburgh, 1885). Famed Scottish violinist Bill Hardie states, "I can recollect this lively tune being played by my good friend Jim Crichton together with his brothers and sister at the family home, 'Gowanlea', New Dear." The hornpipe's appearance in Laybourn's 1885 Scottish collection is predated by its printing (as "Holmes' Hornpipe" and "Occidental Hornpipe") in William Bradbury Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883).
