The tune was entered into the 1840 music manuscript collection of musician John Rook, Waverton, Cumbria. The word scarrow is though to descend from Norse origin. "Scarrow" has the meaning of hut corner/nook, but in Scotland also means 'faint light'. "Rakes of..." usually is followed by a place-name, and the title may refer to Scarrow Hill, a village near Carlisle, Cumbria.
