"The Widow's Rant" was entered into the music manuscript collections of American musicians Edward Murphy (1790, Newport, R.I.) and Luther Kingsley (1795, Mansfield, Conn.). The tune also turns up in one of the turn-of-the-20th century Harding Co. publications (New York) as "Newsman (The)."
