WASHING DAY [1], THE. AKA and see “There’s Nae Luck Aboot the Hoose (There’s Nae Luck Ava) (1),” “Up and Waur Them A’, Willie (1).” English, American; Schottische. USA, northern New York. G Major (Bohrer): A Major (Kennedy, Raven). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Kennedy, Raven): AA’BB’ (Bohrer). A version of “Nae Luck about the House,” titles from another song sung to the tune. Musicians in southern England apparently often paired the tune with “Old Mrs. Huddledee” and “Keel Row (The)”; Norfolk area concertina player Scan Tester (1887-1972) and fiddler Walter Bulwer (1882-c. 1972) both indepently knew the medley.
Source for notated version: a “family tune” learned by fiddler Vic Kibler (Hamilton County, New York) from his uncle Echtor Fountain (b. 1887); “I remember him specifically teaching me that tune. Grandpa and everyone played it” [Bohrer].
