GAME COCK [1], THE (An Coileach Comhraic). AKA and see "Bog Carrot (The)," "Game Cock Reel," "Man in the Moon (1) (The)." Irish, Slide (12/8 time); Scottish, Strathspey . D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "The Game Cock" is a strathspey first printed in Glasgow musician James Aird's last collection (1803). The same melody set as a reel can be found in Ryan's Mammoth Collection as "Game Cock Reel." In addition to a slide (12/8 setting), Brendan Breathnach and Jackie Small find another reel setting in the Sliabh Luachra region of southwest Ireland collected from Jack Connell (or Jack the Lighthouse, as he was better known, named for the townland where he lived). Kanturk, County Cork, accordion player Jackie Daly added another part to the reel setting and titled it "Bog Carrot (The)." They find a more distanced version in the strathspey "Captain Francis Wemyss," and note the tune is related to "Western Lasses (The)."
