RATHLIN ISLAND. Irish, Reel (cut time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune has been attributed to Dublin-born uilleann piper Peter Browne. Rathlin Island, County Antrim, is one of several islands between Ireland and Kintyre, Scotland. The fishhook-shaped island served as the refuge of Scottish patriot Robert Bruce in the year 1306, and it is said that it was on Rathlin that he saw a spider rebuilding its web that suggested to him to consider trying again to struggle towards a successful rebellion against the English.
