BUNKER HILL [2] (Cnoc Bunceir). Irish, Reel. D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC (Flaherty, O'Neill): AABBCC (Taylor/Tweed). O'Neill (Irish Folk Music, a Fascinating Hobby, pg. 98) notes that Bunker Hill was the collector, musician and priest Dr. Henebry's address "in or near the city of Waterford, Ireland". Paul de Grae believes there is a connection with the 18th century battle near Boston harbor, however, as Henebry was at one time a professor of Gaelic at Washington D.C.'s Georgetown University, "and doubtless was an admirer of the American Revolution." The 'A' part is similar to the 'A' part of version #2.
Sources for notated verisons: flute player Colm O'Donnell (b. 1962, Aclare, County Sligo, Ireland) [Flaherty]; John Mulvihill, a native of Limerick [O'Neill]; accordionist and set dancer Mike Butler (Ennis, County Clare) [Taylor/Tweed].
Printed source: Flaherty (Trip to Sligo), 1990; p. 10. O'Neill (Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems), 1907; No. 787, p. 137. Taylor (Traditional Irish Music: Karen Tweed's Irish Choice), 1994; p. 14.
