COME TO THE RAFFLE. AKA and see "Tongs by the Fire [1]." American, Jig. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composition credited to Jas. Hand (Ryan/Cole). Unfortunately, nothing is known for certain about who he was, although he may have been a stage performer or band-leader from Massachusetts in the mid-19th century. It also appears he had a relative (brother?, father?) as some compositions in Ryan's Mammoth are attributed to a Johnny Hand.
Printed sources: Cole (1000 Fiddle Tunes), 1940; p. 56. O'Neill (1915 ed.), 1987; No. 180, p. 98 (appears as "Tongs by the Fire"). Ryan's Mammoth Collection, 1883; p. 84.
