PLANXTY DREW (Pleraca Dreu). Irish, Air or Planxty (6/8 time, "spirited"). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Donal O'Sullivan (Carolan: The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper, 1958) presumes the subject of the air to have been one of the Drews of Drewstown House, County Meath, near Athboy and close to the border with Westmeath. The family scion was Francis Drew, a Captain in Queen Elizabeth's army in 1598. See note for "Annotation:Planxty O'Daly" for more.
Source for notated version: “From P. Carew’s MSS” [Stanford/Petrie]. Collector George Petrie () obtained a number of tunes in his collection from the music manuscript of Patrick Carew.
