John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Neil Stewart's 1761 Collection of the Newest and Best Reels or Country Dances (p. 51) and Mackintosh's Airs, Minuets, Gavotts and Reels (1783, p. 35). Joshua Campbell printed the reel in his 1789 collection under the title "Miss Dalryple's Reel."
