Composed by Aberdeenshire fiddler-composer [[biography:Alexander Walker]], who was the gardener for the Forbes family at Castle Newe. According to a newspaper of Friday 16 Sept., 1859, Queen Victoria, her husband Prince Albert, and two of their children, Princesses Alice and Helena, toured Strathdon the day before, stopping at Castle Newe "where her Majesty was graciously pleased to rest and partake of refreshment. Sir Charles's guests, Colonel John Forbes, C.B., Mr. Sept. Carlisle, Captain Montagu Battye (Lady Forbes's brother) and Mr. Charles Leith Hay, Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders, were presented to her Majesty by Sir Charles." The Queen and family did not stay, however, and returned to their Scottish residence, Balmoral, that day.
