A new Earl of Leven (pronounced 'Lee-ven') came to the title in the year or two prior to the issuing of Nathaniel Gow's Sixth Collection (1822).  He ws David Leslie-Melville, the 8th Earl of Leven, 7th Earl of Melville (1785-1860), a career naval officer and later a Scots representative peer and deputy-lieutenant of Fifeshire.
