He is perhaps named after fiddler-composer James Porteous (1762-1847), who is lightly regarded nowadays but who contributed a couple of lasting tunes to the reportory (see "[[Miss Rogerson's Strathspey]] AKA "[[South of the Grampians]]).

Accoding to the note accompanying the strathspey, it was composed by the nine-year-old son of Annandale, Dumfries, fiddler-composer biography:James Porteous (1762-1847). The strathspey was entered into the c. 1850 music copybook of Lake District, Cumbria, musician William Irwin.
