The variant words of the title, yeil, yill, yell, yeal, yuill, etc. are forms and usages of 'ale' (i.e. beer), accoording to Dictionary of the Scots Language [1]. The strathspey first appeared in print in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection, according to John Glen (1891).
