ROUND, THE. AKA and see "Mr. Lane’s Maggot," “Polly for ever,” “Richmond Ball.” English, Country Dance Tune (2/2 time). D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was first published as "Mr. Lane’s Maggot" in 1695, but appeared as "The Round" in Henry Playford's Dancing Master, 11th edition (1701). Subsequently it was included in every edition of the Dancing Master through the 18th and last issuing in 1728. It was also printed by John Walsh in his Compleat Country Dancing Master (1718). See also William Vickers’ major-mode version in his 1770 Northumbrian music manuscript collection under the title “Richmond Ball.”
