Back to Peeler's Jacket (2)
PEELER'S JACKET [2] (Casog An Sitmaor/Sitmaoir). AKA and see "Flannel Jacket," "Hibernia's Pride," “New Policeman (2),” "Peeler's Cap (1) (The)." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (O'Neill/1850 & 1001, Stanford/Petrie): AABB (Cranitch, Mulvihill): AABB' (O'Neill/Krassen). Irish collector George Petrie (Ancient Music of Ireland, vol. 2, 1855) dated the tune "no earlier" than the 18th century, and although he printed the tune under the title "Flannel Jacket" he acknowledged "it is now generally known by the more modern name of 'The Peeler's Jacket'." The title appeared as "Fallen Jacket Reel" on an album by Cape Breton fiddler Johnny Wilmot. Petrie had the tune from a younger contemporary collector, P.W. Joyce, but said the accuracy of the notation "has been verified by other settings which I found the MS. books of the Cork piper, Patrick Carew."
