Charles Wolfe (1997) characterizes this piece as a construct of Kanawha County, West Virginia, fiddler Clark Kessinger's (1896-1975), pieced together from parts of different tunes. Puncheon refers to a type of wooden floor made from split logs. The melody is reminiscent of "Briarpicker Brown" in parts.
