WINE'S DELIGHT. AKA - "N____'s Delight," "Watermelon Pie." American, Reel (cut time). A Major/Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Wine's Delight" is a tune West Virginia fiddler Melvin Wine (1909-2003), who lived all his life in Copen, Braxton County. The original title is "N____'s Delight" (the obvious racial slur), and it was so listed on a cassette tape of the Glenville Hotel (W.Va.) jam in 1976 [1]; Melvin was among the musicians, with Jeff Joehring, Armin Barnett, Pete Hoover, Carl Baron, Dave Milk and T. Marcus. The Canote Brothers and west coast old-time musicians renamed it "Watermelon Pie" when learning it in the 1970's, but that name was supplanted when "Wine's Delight" (from an unknown source) caught on as a title. Wine himself adopted the 'Watermelon' title in pubic, but introduced it from the stage at the 1982 Fiddle Tunes Festival concert conflating the titles "N___'s/Wine's Delight" and "Watermelon Pie" and announced it as "Watermelon Delight."
