BEES IN THE HEATHER, THE. Irish, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. The jig was played around Ardfert, north County Kerry, in the 20th century and is associated with the playing of fiddler Paddy O'Sullivan and fiddler Ned Nolan (who often played with O'Sullivan, and who also frequently played the viola), and Tom McCarthy [1]. McCarthy was an uilleann piper whose lifetime spanned three centuries. He was born in 1799, he lived until 1904. He performed for visitors on the Castle Green, Ballybunion, and was in demand in the north Kerry Great Houses. A postcard printed by Lawrence of Dublin depicts a piper with the rhyme:
I like to hear Tennhauser on a fine orchestral band,
Or listen to Padereswski when he's playing on a grand.
But there's something more enchanting to the heart that is Irish-born,
To hear old Tim McCarthy playing "The Hare among the Corn". [2]
According to locals, the piper's name was definitely Tom, not Tim.
