BARLEY CAKE [1]. English, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune (of which Vickers' is a version) appears in John Walsh's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing Master (3rd Edition), published in London in 1735 (reissued in 1749); and in John Johnson's Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, 1744). It also appears in a few musicians manuscript collections, including William Vickers' (Northumberland, 1770), Walter Rainstorp (Cheapside, London, 1747), and Thomas Hammersley (London, 1790), and in David Young's MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1740, p. 287).
