LADY BETTY COCHRANE [1]. Scottish, Reel. B Flat Major (Stewart): C Major (Muhollan): D Major (John Gow). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Gow): AABB' (Mulhollan). "Lady Betty Cochrane (1)" was very popular reel, judging by the number of collections in which it appears. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Robert Bremner's 1757 (p. 72) and Daniel Dow's c. 1775 (p. 4) collections, although it also appears in Neil Stewart's 1761 collection and Robert MacIntosh's 1783 collection (p. 32). London music publisher John Gow (Niel Gow's son) included it in his Favorite Collection of Slow Airs, Strathspeys and Reels (c. 1804). The tune appears in the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper Canon biography:James Goodman.
