OVER THE MOOR TO MAGGIE [3]. Scottish, Air and Country Dance Tune (cut time). D Major (Aird): G Major (Oswald, Wright). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Aird): ABCDE (Wright): AABBCCDDEEFF (Oswald). A melody by this name is contained in the 1768 Gillespie Manuscript of Perth, and a number of other 18th century collections, but the earliest printing is in Alexander Stuart's Musick for Allan Ramsey's Collection of Scots Songs (Edinburgh, 1724). Ramsay's song, printed in his Tea-table Miscellany, vol. 2, begins:

And I'll o'er the Moor to Maggy,
Her wit and sweetness call me,
Then to my fair I'll show my mind,
Whatever may befal me.
If she love mirth, I'll learn to sing:
Or likes the Nine to follow,
I'll lay my lugs in Pindus' spring,
And invocate Apollo.
