The tune ws entered as "Straw Berry Banks" into the mid-19th century music manuscript collection (vol. 4, p. 53) of County Cork Church of Ireland cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman. It was also entered into the mid-19th century Rice-Walsh manuscript from County Kerry fiddle teacher Jeremiah Breen, although under the title "Early Rose (The)," and County Leitrim fiddler biography:Stephen Grier penned it into Book 2 of his large c. 1883 music manuscript collection as "Blackberry Blossom (6)."
